RosaliewaspleasedwiththethoughtsofbecomingmistressofAshbyParkshewaselatedwiththeprospectofthebridalceremonyanditsattendantsplendourandéclat,thehoneymoonspentabroad,andthesubsequentgaietiessheexpectedtoenjoyinLondonandelsewheresheappearedprettywellpleasedtoo,forthetimebeing,withSirThomashimself,becauseshehadsolatelyseenhim,dancedwithhim,andbeenflatteredbyhimbut,afterall,sheseemedtoshrinkfromtheideaofbeingsosoonunited:shewishedtheceremonytobedelayedsomemonths,atleastandIwishedittoo.Itseemedahorriblethingtohurryontheinauspiciousmatch,andnottogivethepoorcreaturetimetothinkandreasonontheirrevocablestepshewasabouttotake.Imadenopretensionto“amother’swatchful,anxiouscare,”butIwasamazedandhorrifiedatMrs.Murray’sheartlessness,orwantofthoughtfortherealgoodofherchildandbymyunheededwarningsandexhortations,Ivainlystrovetoremedytheevil.MissMurrayonlylaughedatwhatIsaidandIsoonfoundthatherreluctancetoanimmediateunionarosechieflyfromadesiretodowhatexecutionshecouldamongtheyounggentlemenofheracquaintance,beforeshewasincapacitatedfromfurthermischiefofthekind.Itwasforthiscausethat,beforeconfidingtomethesecretofherengagement,shehadextractedapromisethatIwouldnotmentionawordonthesubjecttoanyone.AndwhenIsawthis,andwhenIbeheldherplungemorerecklesslythaneverintothedepthsofheartlesscoquetry,Ihadnomorepityforher.“Comewhatwill,”Ithought,“shedeservesit.SirThomascannotbetoobadforherandthesoonersheisincapacitatedfromdeceivingandinjuringothersthebetter.”
