“Well,Mary,”hesaid,withacuriouslaugh,“Imustbeanarrantfool,forIthoughtyoudid.”Theywalkedforaminuteortwoinsilence,andsuddenlyheturnedtoher,lookedather,andexclaimed:“Idon’tbelieveyou,Mary.You’renottellingmethetruth.”
“I’mtootiredtoargue,Ralph,”shereplied,turningherheadawayfromhim.“IaskyoutobelievewhatIsay.Ican’tmarryyouIdon’twanttomarryyou.”
ThevoiceinwhichshestatedthiswassoevidentlythevoiceofoneinsomeextremityofanguishthatRalphhadnocoursebuttoobeyher.Andassoonasthetoneofhervoicehaddiedout,andthesurprisefadedfromhismind,hefoundhimselfbelievingthatshehadspokenthetruth,forhehadbutlittlevanity,andsoonherrefusalseemedanaturalthingtohim.Heslippedthroughallthegradesofdespondencyuntilhereachedabottomofabsolutegloom.FailureseemedtomarkthewholeofhislifehehadfailedwithKatharine,andnowhehadfailedwithMary.UpatoncesprangthethoughtofKatharine,andwithitasenseofexultingfreedom,butthishecheckedinstantly.NogoodhadevercometohimfromKatharinehiswholerelationshipwithherhadbeenmadeupofdreamsandashethoughtofthelittlesubstancetherehadbeeninhisdreamshebegantolaytheblameofthepresentcatastropheuponhisdreams.
