Theafternoonwasalreadygrowingdarkwhenthetwootherwayfarers,MaryandRalphDenham,cameoutonthehighroadbeyondtheoutskirtsofLincoln.Thehighroad,astheybothfelt,wasbettersuitedtothisreturnjourneythantheopencountry,andforthefirstmileorsoofthewaytheyspokelittle.InhisownmindRalphwasfollowingthepassageoftheOtwaycarriageovertheheathhethenwentbacktothefiveortenminutesthathehadspentwithKatharine,andexaminedeachwordwiththecarethatascholardisplaysupontheirregularitiesofanancienttext.Hewasdeterminedthattheglow,theromance,theatmosphereofthismeetingshouldnotpaintwhathemustinfutureregardassoberfacts.OnhersideMarywassilent,notbecauseherthoughtstookmuchhandling,butbecausehermindseemedemptyofthoughtasherheartoffeeling.OnlyRalph’spresence,assheknew,preservedthisnumbness,forshecouldforeseeatimeoflonelinesswhenmanyvarietiesofpainwouldbesether.Atthepresentmomenthereffortwastopreservewhatshecouldofthewreckofherself-respect,forsuchshedeemedthatmomentaryglimpseofherlovesoinvoluntarilyrevealedtoRalph.Inthelightofreasonitdidnotmuchmatter,perhaps,butitwasherinstincttobecarefulofthatvisionofherselfwhichkeepspacesoevenlybesideeveryoneofus,andhadbeendamagedbyherconfession.Thegraynightcomingdownoverthecountrywaskindtoherandshethoughtthatoneofthesedaysshewouldfindcomfortinsittingupontheearth,alone,beneathatree.Lookingthroughthedarkness,shemarkedtheswellinggroundandthetree.Ralphmadeherstartbysayingabruptly
