28.Beck,HistoryofIron(GeschichtedesEisens),1:906,saysthatironballswereamongtheearliestprooffortheinventionofironcastingandexistedlongbefore1470,whenLouisXIsupposedlyboughtthesecretfromaGermanJew(p.910).Onp.915heevenclaimstheygobacktothebeginningofthefifteenthcentury.Butthatcertainlyseemsfalse.Inthosecaseswhereironballsarementionedearlier,theymayhavebeen,asBeckhimselfsays,forgedballs,andthecast-ironballsthatappearedtowardtheendofthefifteenthcenturywereregardedassomethingentirelynew.Jähns,1:427,citesthestatementfromananonymousmilitarybookdated1450totheeffectthatstoneballsweretobepreferredbecausetheyweremuchlessexpensivethanthoseofironorlead.Thehighprice,however,canhardlyhavebeenadecisivefactorwhenwerealizethat,althoughtheindividualstoneballwasmuchcheaper,themanufacture,transportation,andmanipulationofthecannonthatitrequiredwereallthemorecostly.ThemanuscriptofabookonpyrotechnicsthatJähns,2:405,placesintheyear1454recommendscoveringironballswithcastlead.Thiscannodoubtreferonlytoforgedironballswhichwereroundedoffwiththeleadcasting,somethingthatcouldnotbedoneeasilybyforging.Thiswouldthereforeseemtobeindirectproofthatthecastingofironitselfwasnotyetunderstood.ANuremberginventoryof1462thatismentionedinJähns,1:427,doesnotshowironcannonballs.
