V.TheGovernmentofChinahavingcompelledtheBritishmerchantstradingatCantontodealexclusivelywithcertainChinesemerchants,calledHongmerchants(orCo-Hong),whohadbeenlicensedbytheChineseGovernmentforthatpurpose,theEmperorofChinaagreestoabolishthatpracticeinfutureatallportswhereBritishmerchantsmayreside,andtopermitthemtocarryontheirmercantiletransactionswithwhateverpersonstheypleaseandHisImperialMajestyfurtheragreestopaytotheBritishGovernmentthesumof3,000,000ofdollars,onaccountofdebtsduetoBritishsubjectsbysomeofthesaidHongmerchants(orCo-Hong),whohavebecomeinsolvent,andwhooweverylargesumsofmoneytosubjectsofHerBritannicMajesty. VI.TheGovernmentofHerBritannicMajestyhavingbeenobligedtosendoutanexpeditiontodemandandobtainredressfortheviolentandunjustproceedingsoftheChineseHighAuthoritiestowardsHerBritannicMajesty'sofficerandsubjects,theEmperorofChinaagreestopaythesumof12,000,000ofdollars,onaccountoftheexpensesincurredandHerBritannicMajesty'sPlenipotentiaryvoluntarilyagrees,onbehalfofHerMajesty,todeductfromthesaidamountof12,000,000ofdollars,anysumswhichmayhavebeenreceivedbyHerMajesty'scombinedforces,asransomforcitiesandtownsinChina,subsequenttothe1stdayofAugust,1841. VII.Itisagreed,thatthetotalamountof21,000,000ofdollars,describedinthe3precedingArticles,shallbepaidasfollows: 6,000,000immediately. 6,000,000in1843thatis,3,000,000onorbeforethe30thofthemonthofJune,and3,000,000onorbeforethe31stofDecember. 5,000,000in1844thatis,2,500,000onorbeforethe30thofJune,and2,500,000onorbeforethe31stofDecember. 4,000,000in1845thatis,2,000,000onorbeforethe30thofJune,and2,000,000onorbeforethe31stofDecember.
