toconcludeaTreatyforthatpurpose,andhavethereforenamedastheirPlenipotentiaries,thatistosay:HerMajestytheQueenofGreatBritainandIreland,HENRYPOTTINGER,Bart.,aMajorGeneralintheServiceoftheEastIndiaCompany,etc.,etc.AndHisImperialMajestytheEmperorofChina,theHighCommiasionersKEYING,aMemberoftheImperialHouse,aGuardianoftheCrownPrinceandGeneraloftheGarrisonofCantonandELEPOO,ofImperialKindred,graciouslypermittedtoweartheinsigniaofthefirstrank,andthedistinctionofPeacock'sfeather,latelyMinisterandGovernorGeneraletc.,andnowLieutenant-GeneralCommandingatChapoo:Who,afterhavingcommunicatedtoeachothertheirrespectiveFullPowers,andfoundthemtobeingoodanddueform,haveagreeduponandconcludedthefollowing[selected]Articles:
I.ThereshallhenceforwardbepeaceandfriendshipbetweenHerMajestytheQueenoftheUnitedKingdomofGreatBritainandIrelandandHisMajestytheEmperorofChina,andbetweentheirrespectivesubjects,whoshallenjoyfullsecurityandprotectionfortheirpersonsandpropertywithinthedominionsoftheother.
II.HisMajestytheEmperorofChinaagrees,thatBritishsubjects,withtheirfamiliesandestablishments,shallbeallowedtoreside,forthepurposesofcarryingontheirmercantilepursuits,withoutmolestationorrestraint,atthecitiesandtownsofCanton,Amoy,Foochowfoo,Ningpo,andShanghaiandHerMajestytheQueenofGreatBritain,&c.,willappointSuperintendents,orConsularofficers,toresideateachoftheabove-namedcitiesortowns,tobethemediumofcommunicationbetweentheChineseauthoritiesandthesaidmerchants,andtoseethatthejustdutiesandotherduesoftheChineseGovernment,ashereafterprovidedfor,aredulydischargedbyHerBritannicMajesty'ssubjects.
III.ItbeingobviouslynecessaryanddesirablethatBritishsubjectsshouldhavesomeportwhereattheymay[maintain]andrefittheirshipswhenrequired,andkeepstoresforthatpurpose,HisMajestytheEmperorofChinacedestoHerMajestytheQueenofGreatBritain,&c.,theIslandofHong-Kong,tobepossessedinperpetuitybyHerBritannicMajesty,herheirsandsuccessors,andtobegovernedbysuchlawsandregulationsasHerMajestytheQueenofGreatBritain,&c.,shallseefittodirect.
IV.TheEmperorofChinaagreestopaythesumof6,000,000ofdollars,asthevalueoftheopiumwhichwasdeliveredupatCantoninthemonthofMarch,1839,asaransomforthelivesofHerBritannicMajesty'sSuperin
