“Monsieur,”atlastsaidmyquietcompanion,asstirlessinherhappinessasamouseinitsterror.Evennowinspeakingshescarcelyliftedherhead.

Francesseemedtoconsider.Thereissomethingflatteringtoman’sstrength,somethingconsonanttohishonourablepride,intheideaofbecomingtheprovidenceofwhatheloves—feedingandclothingit,asGoddoestheliliesofthefield.So,todecideherresolution,Iwenton:—
“Lifehasbeenpainfulandlaboriousenoughtoyousofar,Francesyourequirecompleterestyourtwelvehundredfrancswouldnotformaveryimportantadditiontoourincome,andwhatsacrificeofcomforttoearnit!Relinquishyourlabours:youmustbeweary,andletmehavethehappinessofgivingyourest.”
IamnotsurewhetherFranceshadaccordeddueattentiontomyharangueinsteadofansweringmewithherusualrespectfulpromptitude,sheonlysighedandsaid,—
