“Well,andIhadheardofyouasaveryprettygirl,andwhatwerewetowaitforbesides?Idonotlikehavingsuchthingssolonginhand.IwishFrederickwouldspreadalittlemorecanvass,andbringushomeoneoftheseyoungladiestoKellynch.Thentherewouldalwaysbecompanyforthem.AndveryniceyoungladiestheybothareIhardlyknowonefromtheother.”
“Verygoodhumoured,unaffectedgirls,indeed,”saidMrsCroft,inatoneofcalmerpraise,suchasmadeAnnesuspectthatherkeenerpowersmightnotconsidereitherofthemasquiteworthyofherbrother“andaveryrespectablefamily.Onecouldnotbeconnectedwithbetterpeople.MydearAdmiral,thatpost!weshallcertainlytakethatpost.”
Butbycoollygivingthereinsabetterdirectionherselftheyhappilypassedthedangerandbyonceafterwardsjudiciouslyputtingoutherhandtheyneitherfellintoarut,norranfoulofadung-cartandAnne,withsomeamusementattheirstyleofdriving,whichsheimaginednobadrepresentationofthegeneralguidanceoftheiraffairs,foundherselfsafelydepositedbythemattheCottage.
