ShewisheditmightbepossibleforhertoavoideverseeingCaptainWentworthattheHall:thoseroomshadwitnessedformermeetingswhichwouldbebroughttoopainfullybeforeherbutshewasyetmoreanxiousforthepossibilityofLadyRussellandCaptainWentworthnevermeetinganywhere.Theydidnotlikeeachother,andnorenewalofacquaintancenowcoulddoanygoodandwereLadyRusselltoseethemtogether,shemightthinkthathehadtoomuchself-possession,andshetoolittle. ThesepointsformedherchiefsolicitudeinanticipatingherremovalfromUppercross,whereshefeltshehadbeenstationedquitelongenough.HerusefulnesstolittleCharleswouldalwaysgivesomesweetnesstothememoryofhertwomonths’visitthere,buthewasgainingstrengthapace,andshehadnothingelsetostayfor. Theconclusionofhervisit,however,wasdiversifiedinawaywhichshehadnotatallimagined.CaptainWentworth,afterbeingunseenandunheardofatUppercrossfortwowholedays,appearedagainamongthemtojustifyhimselfbyarelationofwhathadkepthimaway. Aletterfromhisfriend,CaptainHarville,havingfoundhimoutatlast,hadbroughtintelligenceofCaptainHarville’sbeingsettledwithhisfamilyatLymeforthewinteroftheirbeingtherefore,quiteunknowingly,withintwentymilesofeachother.CaptainHarvillehadneverbeeningoodhealthsinceaseverewoundwhichhereceivedtwoyearsbefore,andCaptainWentworth’sanxietytoseehimhaddeterminedhimtogoimmediatelytoLyme.Hehadbeenthereforfour-and-twentyhours.Hisacquittalwascomplete,hisfriendshipwarmlyhonoured,alivelyinterestexcitedforhisfriend,andhisdescriptionofthefinecountryaboutLymesofeelinglyattendedtobytheparty,thatanearnestdesiretoseeLymethemselves,andaprojectforgoingthitherwastheconsequence.
