“Thismorning,whenIcamedown,abouthalfanhourbeforenoon,Mr.Earnshawwassittingbythefire,deadlysickhisevilgenius,almostasgauntandghastly,leantagainstthechimney.Neitherappearedinclinedtodine,and,havingwaitedtillallwascoldonthetable,Icommencedalone.Nothinghinderedmefromeatingheartily,andIexperiencedacertainsenseofsatisfactionandsuperiority,as,atintervals,Icastalooktowardsmysilentcompanions,andfeltthecomfortofaquietconsciencewithinme.AfterIhaddone,Iventuredontheunusuallibertyofdrawingnearthefire,goingroundEarnshaw’sseat,andkneelinginthecornerbesidehim.
