Tiffsoftlycoveredthefire,andsatdownbythebed,watchingtheflickeringshadowsastheydancedupwardonthewall,listeningtotheheavysighsofthepine-trees,andthehardbreathingofthesleepingman.Sometimeshenoddedsleepily,andthen,recovering,rose,andtookaturntoawakenhimself.Ashadowysenseoffearfelluponhimnotthatheapprehendedanything,forheregardedthewordsofhismistressonlyastheforebodingsofaweariedinvalid.Theideathatshecouldactuallydie,andgoanywhere,withouthimtotakecareofher,seemednevertohaveoccurredtohim.Aboutmidnight,asifaspirithadlaiditshanduponhim,hiseyesflewwideopenwithasuddenstart.Herthin,coldhandwaslyingonhishereyes,largeandblue,shonewithasingularandspiritualradiance.
"Tiff,"shegasped,speakingwithdifficulty,"I'veseentheonethatsaidthat,andit'salltrue,too!andI'veseenallwhyI'vesufferedsomuch.He—He—Heisgoingtotakeme!TellthechildrenaboutHim!"Therewasaflutteringsigh,aslightshiver,andthelidsfellovertheeyesforever.
