Mrs.Pecqoftencalledthisgoodneighbor“mylady”whenspeakingofher,forMrs.Minotwasatruegentlewoman,andmuchpleasantertolivewiththanthetitledmistresshadbeen.
Joescuddedawayasiftheconstablewasafterhim,andpresentlyFrankwasseenslowlyapproachingwithanunusuallysoberfaceandapairofverydirtyhands.
“Thankheaven,he'ssafe!”and,softlyopeningthedoor,Mrs.Pecqactuallyhustledtheyoungmasterintotheante-roomasunceremoniouslyasshehadhustledJoe.

HereJackcamehurryingin,havingheardthenews,andrefusedtobelieveitfromanylipsbutFrank's.Whenhecouldnolongerdoubt,hewassomuchimpressedwiththedaringofthedeedthathehadnothingbutadmirationforhisbrother,tillasuddenthoughtmadehimclaphishandsandexclaimexultingly,—
