AsThornyhadtalkedhimselfhoarse,hewasveryreadytodismisshisclassofonetofishthemilk-bottleoutofthebrookandrecesswasprolongedtillnextday.ButbothboysfoundanewpleasureintheprettypastimetheymadeofitforactiveBenrangedthewoodsandfieldswithatinboxslungoverhisshoulder,andfeebleThornyhadalittleroomfittedupforhisownuse,wherehepressedflowersinnewspaperbooks,driedherbsonthewalls,hadbottlesandcups,pansandplatters,forhistreasures,andmadeasmuchlitterasheliked.
Presently,Benbroughtsuchlivelyaccountsofthegreennookswherejacks-in-the-pulpitpreachedtheirlittlesermonsbrooks,besidewhichgrewbluevioletsandlovelyfernsrocks,roundwhichdancedthecolumbineslikerosyelves,orthetreeswherebirdsbuilt,squirrelschattered,andwoodchucksburrowed,thatThornywasseizedwithadesiretogoandseethesebeautiesforhimself.SoJackwassaddled,andwentplodding,scrambling,andwanderingintoallmannerofpleasantplaces,alwaysbringinghomeastronger,brownerriderthanhecarriedaway.
ThisdelightedMissCeliaandshegladlysawthemrambleofftogether,leavinghertimetostitchhappilyatcertaindaintybitsofsewing,writevoluminousletters,ordreamoverothersquiteaslong,swinginginherhammockunderthelilacs.
