HerehisdaughterJosephine—aprettyfair-hairedgirlofeighteen,whohadbeentiedonahorseattwoyearsold,andhadmadeawillattwelve,whichshealwayscarriedaboutwithher,expressiveofherdyingdesiretobedrawntothegravebythetwopiebaldponies—cried,‘Father,hush!shehascomeback!’ThencameSissyJupe,runningintotheroomasshehadrunoutofit.Andwhenshesawthemallassembled,andsawtheirlooks,andsawnofatherthere,shebrokeintoamostdeplorablecry,andtookrefugeonthebosomofthemostaccomplishedtight-ropelady(herselfinthefamily-way),whokneltdownonthefloortonurseher,andtoweepoverher.

Mr.Bounderbybeingrestrainedbythismildsuggestion,Mr.Gradgrindfoundanopeningforhiseminentlypracticalexpositionofthesubject.
