LordSt.Simonhadbynomeansrelaxedhisrigidattitude,buthadlistenedwithafrowningbrowandacompressedliptothislongnarrative.
“Excuseme,”hesaid,“butitisnotmycustomtodiscussmymostintimatepersonalaffairsinthispublicmanner.”
“Thenyouwon’tforgiveme?Youwon’tshakehandsbeforeIgo?”
“Oh,certainly,ifitwouldgiveyouanypleasure.”Heputouthishandandcoldlygraspedthatwhichsheextendedtohim.
“Ihadhoped,”suggestedHolmes,“thatyouwouldhavejoinedusinafriendlysupper.”
“Ithinkthatthereyouaskalittletoomuch,”respondedhisLordship.“Imaybeforcedtoacquiesceintheserecentdevelopments,butIcanhardlybeexpectedtomakemerryoverthem.IthinkthatwithyourpermissionIwillnowwishyouallaverygood-night.”Heincludedusallinasweepingbowandstalkedoutoftheroom.

“Andhowintheworlddidyoufindthem?”
“Itmighthavebeendifficult,butfriendLestradeheldinformationinhishandsthevalueofwhichhedidnothimselfknow.Theinitialswere,ofcourse,ofthehighestimportance,butmorevaluablestillwasittoknowthatwithinaweekhehadsettledhisbillatoneofthemostselectLondonhotels.”
“Howdidyoudeducetheselect?”
