“‘SomelittletimeagoIboughtasmallplace—averysmallplace—withintenmilesofReading.Iwasfortunateenoughtodiscoverthattherewasadepositoffuller’s-earthinoneofmyfields.Onexaminingit,however,Ifoundthatthisdepositwasacomparativelysmallone,andthatitformedalinkbetweentwoverymuchlargeronesupontherightandleft—bothofthem,however,inthegroundsofmyneighbours.Thesegoodpeoplewereabsolutelyignorantthattheirlandcontainedthatwhichwasquiteasvaluableasagold-mine.Naturally,itwastomyinteresttobuytheirlandbeforetheydiscovereditstruevalue,butunfortunatelyIhadnocapitalbywhichIcoulddothis.Itookafewofmyfriendsintothesecret,however,andtheysuggestedthatweshouldquietlyandsecretlyworkourownlittledepositandthatinthiswayweshouldearnthemoneywhichwouldenableustobuytheneighbouringfields.Thiswehavenowbeendoingforsometime,andinordertohelpusinouroperationsweerectedahydraulicpress.Thispress,asIhavealreadyexplained,hasgotoutoforder,andwewishyouradviceuponthesubject.Weguardoursecretveryjealously,however,andifitoncebecameknownthatwehadhydraulicengineerscomingtoourlittlehouse,itwouldsoonrouseinquiry,andthen,ifthefactscameout,itwouldbegood-byetoanychanceofgettingthesefieldsandcarryingoutourplans.ThatiswhyIhavemadeyoupromisemethatyouwillnottellahumanbeingthatyouaregoingtoEyfordto-night.IhopethatImakeitallplain?’
