ONEfine,frostySundayinNovember,FrancesandItookalongwalkwemadethetourofthecitybytheBoulevardsand,afterwards,Francesbeingalittletired,wesatdownononeofthosewaysideseatsplacedunderthetrees,atintervals,fortheaccommodationoftheweary.FranceswastellingmeaboutSwitzerlandthesubjectanimatedherandIwasjustthinkingthathereyesspokefullaseloquentlyashertongue,whenshestoppedandremarked—
“Monsieur,thereisagentlemanwhoknowsyou.”

“Youneednotbeginboasting,MonsieurleProfesseurIknowaboutyourappointmentto——College,andallthatBrownhastoldme.”ThenheintimatedthathehadreturnedfromGermanybutadayortwosinceafterwards,heabruptlydemandedwhetherthatwasMadamePelet-ReuterwithwhomhehadseenmeontheBoulevards.Iwasgoingtoutteraratheremphaticnegative,butonsecondthoughtsIcheckedmyself,and,seemingtoassent,askedwhathethoughtofher?
