Itisperhapsnecessarytoexplainhowtheresolutiontogivethesememoirstotheworldhaseventuallybeenarrivedat.Formypart,Ishouldhaveallowedthemtoremainamongtheotherpapersofthefamilybutmywifewishedotherwise.WhenshedesertedherhomeintheNewWorldtobecometheCountessBrandolini,shewasverynaturallyinterestedatfindingamongmyancestorsamanwhohaddistinguishedhimselfingoodworks,soastobegrantedbythePopethetitleofBeatus,whichwasacquiredforhimbytheinfluenceofhisgreat-nephewnotverylongafterhisdeathand,indeed,hadourhouseretainedtheprosperitywhichitenjoyedduringthefifteenthandsixteenthcenturies,hewouldundoubtedlyhavebeencanonised,foritwasawellcertifiedfactthatthenecessarymiracleshadbeenperformedbyh
