Annehadcalledseveraltimesonherfriend,beforetheexistenceofsuchapersonwasknowninCamdenPlace.Atlast,itbecamenecessarytospeakofher.SirWalter,ElizabethandMrsClay,returnedonemorningfromLauraPlace,withasuddeninvitationfromLadyDalrympleforthesameevening,andAnnewasalreadyengaged,tospendthateveninginWestgateBuildings.Shewasnotsorryfortheexcuse.Theywereonlyasked,shewassure,becauseLadyDalrymplebeingkeptathomebyabadcold,wasgladtomakeuseoftherelationshipwhichhadbeensopressedonherandshedeclinedonherownaccountwithgreatalacrity—“Shewasengagedtospendtheeveningwithanoldschoolfellow.”TheywerenotmuchinterestedinanythingrelativetoAnnebutstilltherewerequestionsenoughasked,tomakeitunderstoodwhatthisoldschoolfellowwasandElizabethwasdisdainful,andSirWaltersevere.

“ButwhatdoesLadyRussellthinkofthisacquaintance?”askedElizabeth.
“Sheseesnothingtoblameinit,”repliedAnne“onthecontrary,sheapprovesit,andhasgenerallytakenmewhenIhavecalledonMrsSmith.”
“Westgat
