Irangthenursewassummonedandcame.
“Harriet,Imustbeputtobed,”saidherlittlemistress.“Youmustaskwheremybedis.”
Harrietsignifiedthatshehadalreadymadethatinquiry.
“Askifyousleepwithme,Harriet.”
“No,Missy,”saidthenurse:“youaretosharethisyounglady’sroom,”designatingme.

“Noneedtosaygood-night,sincewesleepinthesamechamber,”wasthereply,withwhichshevanishedfromthedrawing-room.WeheardHarrietproposetocarryherup-stairs.“Noneed,”wasagainheranswer—“noneed,noneed:”andhersmallsteptoiledwearilyupthestaircase.
Ongoingtobedanhourafterwards,Ifoundherstillwideawake.Shehadarrangedherpillowssoastosupportherlittlepersoninasittingposture:herhands,placedonewithintheother,restedquietlyonthesheet,withanold-fashionedcalmmostunchildlike.Iabstainedfromspeakingtoherforsometime,butjustbeforeextinguishingthelight,Irecommendedhertoliedown.
“Byandby,”wastheanswer.
