MydearCatherine,—UnluckilyIwasconfinedtomyroomwhenyourlastlettercame,byacoldwhichaffectedmyeyessomuchastopreventmyreadingitmyself,soIcouldnotrefuseyourfatherwhenheofferedtoreadittome,bywhichmeanshebecameacquainted,tomygreatvexation,withallyourfearsaboutyourbrother.IhadintendedtowritetoReginaldmyselfassoonasmyeyeswouldletme,topointout,aswellasIcould,thedangerofanintimateacquaintance,withsoartfulawomanasLadySusan,toayoungmanofhisage,andhighexpectations.Imeant,moreover,tohaveremindedhimofourbeingquitealonenow,andverymuchinneedofhimtokeepupourspiritstheselongwinterevenings.Whetheritwouldhavedoneanygoodcanneverbesettlednow,butIamexcessivelyvexedthatSirReginaldshouldknowanythingofamatterwhichweforesawwouldmakehimsouneasy.Hecaughtallyourfearsthemomenthehadreadyourletter,andIamsurehehasnothadthebusinessoutofhisheadsince.HewrotebythesameposttoReginaldalongletterfullofitall,andparticularlyaskinganexplanationofwhathemayhaveheardfromLadySusantocontradictthelateshockingreports.Hisanswercamethismorning,whichIshallenclosetoyou,asIthinkyouwillliketoseeit.IwishitwasmoresatisfactorybutitseemswrittenwithsuchadeterminationtothinkwellofLadySusan,thathisassurancesastomarriage,&c.,donotsetmyheartatease.IsayallIcan,however,tosatisfyyourfather,andheiscertainlylessuneasysinceReginald’sletter.Howprovokingitis,mydearCatherine,thatthisunwelcomeguestofyoursshouldnotonlypreventourmeetingthisChristmas,butbetheoccasionofsomuchvexationandtrouble!Kissthedearchildrenforme.
