Amileorsooutuponthemoortheroadtakesaverysuddendipintoahollow,withapeat-coloredstreamrunningswiftlydownthecentreofit.Totherightofthisstood,andstandstothisday,anancientbarrow,orburyingmound,covereddeeplyinabristleofheatherandbracken.Alleynewasploddingdowntheslopeupononeside,whenhesawanolddamecomingtowardshimupontheother,limpingwithwearinessandleaningheavilyuponastick.Whenshereachedtheedgeofthestreamshestoodhelpless,lookingtorightandtoleftforsomeford.Wherethepathrandownagreatstonehadbeenfixedinthecentreofthebrook,butitwastoofarfromthebankforheragedanduncertainfeet.Twiceshethrustforwardatit,andtwiceshedrewback,untilatlast,givingupindespair,shesatherselfdownbythebrinkandwrungherhandswearily.ThereshestillsatwhenAlleynereachedthecrossing.

“FromWiltshire,friend,”saidshe,inaquaveringvoice“threedayshaveIbeenontheroad.Igotomyson,whoisoneoftheKing'sregardersatBrockenhurst.Hehaseversaidthathewouldcareformeinmineoldage.”
“Andrightlytoo,mother,sinceyoucaredforhiminhisyouth.Butwhenhaveyoubrokenfast?”
