Thepicture!—Howeagerhehadbeenaboutthepicture!—andthecharade!—andanhundredothercircumstances—howclearlytheyhadseemedtopointatHarriet.Tobesure,thecharade,withits“readywit”—butthenthe“softeyes”—infactitsuitedneitheritwasajumblewithouttasteortruth.Whocouldhaveseenthroughsuchthick-headednonsense? Certainlyshehadoften,especiallyoflate,thoughthismannerstoherselfunnecessarilygallantbutithadpassedashisway,asamereerrorofjudgment,ofknowledge,oftaste,asoneproofamongothersthathehadnotalwayslivedinthebestsociety,thatwithallthegentlenessofhisaddress,trueelegancewassometimeswantingbut,tillthisveryday,shehadnever,foraninstant,suspectedittomeananythingbutgratefulrespecttoherasHarriet’sfriend.
