Mr.Eltonlookedallhappinessatthispropositionandnothingcouldexceedhisalertnessandattentioninconductingthemintohishouseandendeavouringtomakeeverythingappeartoadvantage.Theroomtheyweretakenintowastheonehechieflyoccupied,andlookingforwardsbehinditwasanotherwithwhichitimmediatelycommunicatedthedoorbetweenthemwasopen,andEmmapassedintoitwiththehousekeepertoreceiveherassistanceinthemostcomfortablemanner.ShewasobligedtoleavethedoorajarasshefounditbutshefullyintendedthatMr.Eltonshouldcloseit.Itwasnotclosed,however,itstillremainedajarbutbyengagingthehousekeeperinincessantconversation,shehopedtomakeitpracticableforhimtochusehisownsubjectintheadjoiningroom.Fortenminutesshecouldhearnothingbutherself.Itcouldbeprotractednolonger.Shewasthenobligedtobefinished,andmakeherappearance.
Theloverswerestandingtogetheratoneofthewindows.Ithadamostfavourableaspectand,forhalfaminute,Emmafeltthegloryofhavingschemedsuccessfully.Butitwouldnotdohehadnotcometothepoint.Hehadbeenmostagreeable,mostdelightfulhehadtoldHarrietthathehadseenthemgoby,andhadpurposelyfollowedthemotherlittlegallantriesandallusionshadbeendropt,butnothingserious.
“Cautious,verycautious,”thoughtEmma“headvancesinchbyinch,andwillhazardnothingtillhebelieveshimselfsecure.”
Still,however,thougheverythinghadnotbeenaccomplishedbyheringeniousdevice,shecouldnotbutflatterherselfthatithadbeentheoccasionofmuchpresentenjoymenttoboth,andmustbeleadingthemforwardtothegreatevent.
