Harriet,shefound,hadneverinherlifebeeninsidetheVicarage,andhercuriositytoseeitwassoextreme,that,consideringexteriorsandprobabilities,Emmacouldonlyclassit,asaproofoflove,withMr.Elton’sseeingreadywitinher.
“Iwishwecouldcontriveit,”saidshe“butIcannotthinkofanytolerablepretenceforgoingin—noservantthatIwanttoinquireaboutofhishousekeeper—nomessagefrommyfather.”
Shepondered,butcouldthinkofnothing.Afteramutualsilenceofsomeminutes,Harrietthusbeganagain—
“Idosowonder,MissWoodhouse,thatyoushouldnotbemarried,orgoingtobemarried!socharmingasyouare!”—
Emmalaughed,andreplied,
“Mybeingcharming,Harriet,isnotquiteenoughtoinducemetomarryImustfindotherpeoplecharming—oneotherpersonatleast.AndIamnotonly,notgoingtobemarried,atpresent,buthaveverylittleintentionofevermarryingatall.”
