“Pray,Mr.Knightley,”saidEmma,whohadbeensmilingtoherselfthroughagreatpartofthisspeech,“howdoyouknowthatMr.Martindidnotspeakyesterday?”

ThiswasobligedtoberepeatedbeforeitcouldbebelievedandMr.Knightleyactuallylookedredwithsurprizeanddispleasure,ashestoodup,intallindignation,andsaid,
