Inaddition,ithasbeenplainlyavowed,bytheexpressedprinciplesandpracticeofChristiansofvariousdenominations,thattheyregarditrightandpropertoputdownallinquiryuponthissubjectbyLynchlaw.
TheOldSchoolPresbyterianChurch,inwhosecommunionthegreaterpartoftheslaveholdingPresbyteriansoftheSoutharefound,hasneverfeltcalledupontodisciplineitsmembersforupholdingasystemwhichdenieslegalmarriagetoallslaves.Yetthischurchwasagitatedtoitsveryfoundationbythediscussionofaquestionofmoralswhichanimpartialobserverwouldprobablyconsideroffarlessmagnitude,namely,whetheramanmightlawfullymarryhisdeceasedwife'ssister.Forthetime,allthestrengthandattentionofthechurchseemedconcentrateduponthisimportantsubject.ThetrialwentfromPresbyterytoSynod,andfromSynodtoGeneralAssemblyandendedwithdeposingaveryrespectableministerforthiscrime.
Rev.RobertJ.Breckenridge,D.D.,amemberoftheOldSchoolAssembly,hasthusdescribedthestateoftheslavepopulationastotheirmarriagerelations:

Now,hadthischurchconsideredthefactthatthreemillionsofmenandwomenwere,bythelawsoftheland,obligedtoliveinthismanner,asofequallyseriousconsequence,itisevident,fromtheingenuity,argument,vehemence,biblicalresearch,anduntiringzeal,whichtheybestowedonMr.McQueen'strial,thattheycouldhavemadeaverystrongcasewithregardtothisalso.
