AstoourmerryfriendJim,heisthelifeofthesettlement.Liberty,itistrue,hasmadehimalittlemoresoberandaveryenergeticandcapablewife,sobererstillbutyetJimhasenoughandtospareofdrollery,whichmakeshimanindispensablerequisiteinallsocialgatherings.
Heworksonhisfarmwithenergy,andrepelswithindignationanysuggestionthathewashappierintheoldtimes,whenhehadabundanceofmoney,andverylittletodo.
Onesuggestionmorewealmosthesitatetomake,lestitshouldgiverisetounfoundedreportsbutweareobligedtospeakthetruth.
AnneClayton,onavisittoafriend'sfamilyinNewHampshire,metwithLivyRay,ofwhomshehadheardNinaspeaksomuch,andverynaturallythetwoladiesfellintoamostintimatefriendshipvisitswereexchangedbetweenthem,andClayton,onfirstintroduction,discoveredtheladyhehadmetintheprisoninAlexandria.
Themostintimatefriendshipexistsbetweenthethree,and,ofcourse,insuchcasesreportswillarisebutweassureourreaderswehaveneverheardofanyauthenticfoundationforthemsothat,inthismatter,wecanclearlyleaveeveryonetopredictaresultaccordingtotheirownfancies.
