Acrowdofpeopleweregatheredupontheshore,who,withthenaturalkindnessofhumanityonsuchoccasions,gatheredthedrenchedandsea-beatenwanderersintoneighboringcottages,wherefoodandfire,andchangesofdryclothing,awaitedthem. Thechildrenexciteduniversalsympathyandattention,andsomanymothersoftheneighborhoodcamebringingofferingsofclothing,thattheirlostwardrobewassoonverytolerablyreplaced.Butnothingcouldcomfortthemforthelossoftheiroldfriend.Invainthe"littledears"weretemptedwithoffersofcakeandcustard,andeveryimaginableeatable.Theysatwiththeirarmsaroundeachother,quietlyweeping. Nomatterhowunsightlythecasketmaybewhichholdsallthelovethereisonearthforus,bethatlovelodgedintheheartofthepoorestandmostuneducated,thewholeworldcanoffernoexchangeforthelossofit.
