Ascornfullaughwastheonlyreply,andthesoundofcracklingfootstepsretreatedrapidly.Hewhoretreatedstruckup,inaclear,loudvoice,oneofthosepeculiarmelodiesinwhichvigorandspiritareblendedwithawildinexpressiblemournfulness.Thevoicewasoneofasingularandindescribablequalityoftoneitwasheavyasthesub-bassofanorgan,andofavelvetysoftness,andyetitseemedtopiercetheairwithakeendividingforcewhichisgenerallycharacteristicofvoicesofmuchlessvolume.Thewordswerethecommencementofawildcamp-meetinghymn,muchinvogueinthoseparts:—

Therewasawild,exultantfulnessoflibertythatrolledinthenoteand,toHarry'sexcitedear,thereseemedinitafiercechallengeofcontempttohisimbecility,andhissoulatthatmomentseemedtoberentasunderwithapangsuchasonlythosecanknowwhohavefeltwhatitistobeaslave.Therewasanuprisingwithinhim,vague,tumultuous,overpoweringdiminstincts,heroicaspirationsthewilltodo,thesoultodareandthen,inamoment,therefollowedthepictureofallsocietyleaguedagainsthim,thehopelessimpossibilityofanyoutlettowhatwasburningwithinhim.Thewatersofanaturenaturallyrallynoble,pentup,andwithoutoutlet,rolledbackuponhisheartwithasuffocatingforce:and,inhishastyanguish,hecursedthedayofhisbirth.ThespasmofhisemotionwasinterruptedbythesuddenappearanceofMillycomingalongthepath.
"Why,blessyou,Milly,"saidHarryinsuddensurprise,"whereareyougoing?"
