HarryspentthenightattheplaceofMr.JohnGordon,andarosethenextmorninginaverydiscontentedmoodofmind.NothingismorevexatioustoanactiveandenterprisingpersonthantobethrownintoastateofentireidlenessandHarry,afterloungingaboutforashorttimeinthemorning,foundhisindignationincreasedbyeverymomentofenforcedabsencefromthesceneofhisdailylaborsandinterest.Havingalwaysenjoyedsubstantiallytheprivilegesofafreemanintheabilitytoregulatehistimeaccordingtohisownideas,tocomeandgo,tobuyandsell,andtransactbusinessunfetteredbyanyfeltcontrol,hewasthemorekeenlyalivetothedegradationimpliedinhispresentposition.

AndHarryjumpeduponhishorse,andturnedhisheadhomeward.Hestruckintoacircuitouspath,whichledalongthatimmensebeltofswampylandtowhichthenameofDismalhasbeengiven.Ashewasridingalong,immersedinthought,theclatterofhorses'feetwasheardinfrontofhim.AsuddenturnoftheroadbroughthimdirectlyfacingtoTomGordonandMr.Jekyl,whohadrisenearlyandstartedoffonhorseback,inordertoreachacertainstagedepotbeforetheheatoftheday.TherewasamomentarypauseonbothsideswhenTomGordon,likeonewhoknowshispower,andisdeterminedtouseittotheutmost,brokeout,scornfully:—
"Stop,youd——dnigger,andtellyourmasterwhereyouaregoing!"
"Youarenotmymaster!"saidHarry,inwordswhoseconcentratedcalmnessconveyedmorebitternessandwraththancouldhavebeengivenbythemostviolentoutburst.
