“Whatmadeyouthinkofhim?”andFranklookedthoughtfullyattheletter,asifturningcarefullyoverinhismindtheideathatJill'squickwitshadjumpedat.

Holdinghimbyonebutton,shewhisperedsomethinginhisearthatmadehimexclaim,withalookattherug,—

“IneverthoughtofittillyoutoldmewhereBobwas,andthenitallsortofburstuponmeinoneminute!”criedJill,wavingherarmsabouttoexpresstheintellectualexplosionwhichhadthrownlightuponthemystery,likesky-rocketsinadarknight.
“Youareasbrightasabutton.NotimetoloseI'moff”andoffhewas,splashingthroughthemudtoposttheletter,onthebackofwhichheadded,tomakethethingsure,“Hurryup.F.M.”
Bothfeltratherguiltynextday,butenjoyedthemselvesverymuchnevertheless,andkeptchucklingovertheminetheyweremakingunderJack'sunconsciousfeet.Theyhardlyexpectedanansweratnoon,astheHillpeoplewerenotveryeagerfortheirmail,butatnightJillwassureofaletter,andtohergreatdelightitcame.Jackbroughtithimself,whichaddedtothefun,andwhilesheeagerlyreadithesatcalmlyporingoverthelatestnumberofhisownprivateandparticular“Youth'sCompanion.”
Bobwasnota“completeletter-writer”byanymeans,andwithgreatlaborandmuchinkhadproducedthefollowingbriefbuthighlysatisfactoryepistle.Notknowinghowtoaddresshisfaircorrespondentheletitalone,andwentatoncetothepointinthefrankestpossibleway:—
