ButCharliewouldnotrelent,andtriedtoturnthesubjectbysayinggravely,asheunfastenedthelittlegoldringfromhiswatch-guard,
“I'vebrokenmyword,soIwanttogivethisbackandfreeyoufromthebargain.I'msorry,butIthinkitafoolishpromise,anddon'tintendtokeepit.Chooseapairofear-ringstosuityourself,asmyforfeit.Youhavearighttowearthemnow.”
“No,Icanonlywearone,andthatisnouse,forArchiewillkeephiswordI'msure!”Rosewassomortifiedandgrievedatthisdownfallofherhopesthatshespokesharply,andwouldnottaketheringthedeserterofferedher.

Andwiththatlastdreadfulblow,Rosewalkedoutoftheroom,leavingCharlieasmuchastonishedasifoneofhispetpigeonshadflowninhisfaceandpeckedathim.Shewassoseldomangry,thatwhenhertemperdidgetthebetterofheritmadeadeepimpressiononthelads,foritwasgenerallyarighteoussortofindignationatsomeinjusticeorwrong-doing,notchildishpassion.
