NowRoseconsideredthisherspecialkingdom,andcamedownupontheinvaderswithanenergywhichamazedthemandquelledtheriotatonce.Theyhadneverseenherrousedbefore,andtheeffectwastremendousalsocomical,forshedrovethewholeflockofboysoutoftheroomlikeanindignantlittlehendefendingherbrood.Theyallwentasmeeklyassheepthesmallladsfledfromthehouseprecipitately,butthethreeelderonesonlyretiredtothenextroom,andremainedtherehopingforachancetoexplainandapologise,andsoappeasetheirateyounglady,whohadsuddenlyturnedthetablesandclatteredthemabouttheirears.
Astheywaited,theyobservedherproceedingsthroughthehalf-opendoor,andcommenteduponthembrieflybutexpressively,feelingquiteboweddownwithremorseattheharmtheyhadinnocentlydone.
“She'sputtheroomtorightsinajiffey.Whatjacksweweretoletthosedogsinandkickupsucharow,”observedSteve,afteraprolongedpeep.
“ThepooroldWormturnsasifshewastreadingonhiminsteadofcuddlinghimlikeapussycat.Isn'thecross,though?”addedCharlie,asMacwasheardgrowlingabouthis“confoundedhead.”
