Whenchurchwasover,Dr.Alecgotintotheporchasquicklyaspossible,andtheretheyoungbearshadahugallround,whilethesistersshookhandsandwelcomedhimwithbrightfacesandgladhearts.RosewasnearlycrushedflatbehindadoorinthatdangerouspassagefrompewtoporchbutUncleMacrescuedher,andputherintothecarriageforsafekeeping.

Inanyotherplacethedefraudedboyswouldhavesetupahowlasitwas,theygrowledandprotestedtillDr.Alecsettledthematterbysaying,
“Nevermind,oldchaps,I'llmakeituptoyouto-morrow,ifyousheeroffquietlyifyoudon't,notablessedthingshallyouhaveoutofmybigboxes.”
