Thensherangthebell,askedforacandleandsomebreadandmilk—MissKeeldar'susualsupperandherown.Fanny,whenshebroughtinthetray,wouldhaveclosedthewindowsandtheshutters,butwasrequestedtodesistforthepresent.Thetwilightwastoocalm,itsbreathtoobalmytobeyetexcluded.Theytooktheirmealinsilence.Carolineroseoncetoremovetothewindow-sillaglassofflowerswhichstoodonthesideboard,theexhalationfromtheblossomsbeingsomewhattoopowerfulforthesultryroom.Inreturningshehalfopenedadrawer,andtookfromitsomethingthatglitteredclearandkeeninherhand.
