Afewweeksafterthat,whenmymotherhadsuppliedherselfwithanassistant,IbecamethewifeofEdwardWestonandneverhavefoundcausetorepentit,andamcertainthatInevershall.Wehavehadtrials,andweknowthatwemusthavethemagainbutwebearthemwelltogether,andendeavourtofortifyourselvesandeachotheragainstthefinalseparation—thatgreatestofallafflictionstothesurvivor.But,ifwekeepinmindthegloriousheavenbeyond,wherebothmaymeetagain,andsinandsorrowareunknown,surelythattoomaybeborneand,meantime,weendeavourtolivetothegloryofHimwhohasscatteredsomanyblessingsinourpath.
Edward,byhisstrenuousexertions,hasworkedsurprisingreformsinhisparish,andisesteemedandlovedbyitsinhabitants—ashedeservesforwhateverhisfaultsmaybeasaman(andnooneisentirelywithout),Idefyanybodytoblamehimasapastor,ahusband,orafather.
Ourchildren,Edward,Agnes,andlittleMary,promisewelltheireducation,forthetimebeing,ischieflycommittedtomeandtheyshallwantnogoodthingthatamother’scarecangive.Ourmodestincomeisamplysufficientforourrequirements:andbypractisingtheeconomywelearntinhardertimes,andneverattemptingtoimitateourricherneighbours,wemanagenotonlytoenjoycomfortandcontentmentourselves,buttohaveeveryyearsomethingtolaybyforourchildren,andsomethingtogivetothosewhoneedit.
