Wenowapproachedastilecommunicatingwithafootpaththatconductedtoafarm-house,where,Isuppose,Mr.Westonpurposedtomakehimself“useful”forhepresentlytookleaveofme,crossedthestile,andtraversedthepathwithhisusualfirm,elastictread,leavingmetoponderhiswordsasIcontinuedmycoursealone.Ihadheardbeforethathehadlosthismothernotmanymonthsbeforehecame.Shethenwasthelastanddearestofhisearlyfriendsandhehadnohome.Ipitiedhimfrommyheart:Ialmostweptforsympathy.Andthis,Ithought,accountedfortheshadeofprematurethoughtfulnessthatsofrequentlycloudedhisbrow,andobtainedforhimthereputationofamoroseandsullendispositionwiththecharitableMissMurrayandallherkin.“But,”thoughtI,“heisnotsomiserableasIshouldbeundersuchadeprivation:heleadsanactivelifeandawidefieldforusefulexertionliesbeforehim.Hecanmakefriendsandhecanmakeahometoo,ifhepleasesand,doubtless,hewillpleasesometime.Godgrantthepartnerofthathomemaybeworthyofhischoice,andmakeitahappyone—suchahomeashedeservestohave!Andhowdelightfulitwouldbeto—”ButnomatterwhatIthought.
Ibeganthisbookwiththeintentionofconcealingnothingthatthosewholikedmighthavethebenefitofperusingafellow-creature’sheart:butwehavesomethoughtsthatalltheangelsinheavenarewelcometobehold,butnotourbrother-men—noteventhebestandkindestamongstthem.
