Theboyproudlyescortedhisparenttotheoldcarry-all,and,tuckinghimselfinbehindwithMrs.Allen,hadthesatisfactionofseeingtheslouchedfelthatsidebysidewiththeSquire'sSundaybeaverinfront,astheydroveoffatsuchanunusuallysmartpace,itwasevidentthatDukeknewtherewasacriticaleyeuponhim.Theinteresttakeninthefatherwasowingtothesonatfirstbut,bythetimethestorywastold,oldBenhadwonfriendsforhimselfnotonlybecauseofthemisfortuneswhichhehadevidentlyborneinamanlyway,butbecauseofhisdelightintheboy'simprovement,andthedesirehefelttoturnhishandtoanyhonestwork,thathemightkeepBenhappyandcontentedinthisgoodhome.
