WhenAxelcameintwohourslater,bringingDellwigandManskeandtwoorthreeotherhelpers,farmers,whohaddrivenacrosstheplaintodowhattheycould,hefoundhishouselitupandfoodanddrinksetoutreadyinthedining-room.
LettyandAnnahadhadtimetorecoverfromtheirtearsandvows,sundrysmallblistersonthebackofLetty'sneckhadbeentreatedwithcottonwool,andtheyhademergedfromtheiragitationtoacalmerstateinwhichthehelpingoftheprincessinthemiddleofthenighttomakesomebodyelse'shousecomfortablewasnotwithoutitsjoys.TheMamsell,nomoreablethantheKleinwaldeservantstowithstandtheauthorityoftheprincess'snameandeye,hadcollectedthemaidsandworkedwithawillandwhen,alldangerofthefirespreadingbeingover,Axelcameindirtyandsmokyandscorched,preparedtohavetohunthimselfinthedarkhousefortherefreshmenthecouldnotbutofferhishelpers,hewasagreeablysurprisedtofindthelampinthehallalight,andtobemetbyawide-awakeMamsellinacleanapronwhoproposedtoprovidethegentlemenwithhotwater.Thiswasveryattentive.Axelhadneverknownhersothoughtful.Thegentlemen,however,withoneaccordrefusedthehotwatertheywoulddrinkaglassofwine,perhaps,asHerrvonLohmsokindlysuggested,andthengototheirhomesandbedsasquicklyaspossible.Manske,byfarthegrimiest,wasalsothemostdecidedinhisrefusalhewasagodlyman,buthedidnotlovesupererogatorywashings,underwhichheadingsurelyawashingattwoo'clockinthemorningcame.Axellefttheminthehallamoment,andwentintohisstudytofetchcigarsandtherehefoundLetty,hidingbehindthedoor.
