ShecouldnotdoubtbutthatWilliam’sletterwasthemostgenuineshehadyetreceivedfromhim.Hehadcometotheconclusionthathecouldnotlivewithouther,hewrote.Hebelievedthatheknewher,andcouldgiveherhappiness,andthattheirmarriagewouldbeunlikeothermarriages.Norwasthesonnet,inspiteofitsaccomplishment,lackinginpassion,andKatharine,asshereadthepagesthroughagain,couldseeinwhatdirectionherfeelingsoughttoflow,supposingtheyrevealedthemselves.Shewouldcometofeelahumoroussortoftendernessforhim,azealouscareforhissusceptibilities,and,afterall,sheconsidered,thinkingofherfatherandmother,whatislove?
Naturally,withherface,position,andbackground,shehadexperienceofyoungmenwhowishedtomarryher,andmadeprotestationsoflove,but,perhapsbecauseshedidnotreturnthefeeling,itremainedsomethingofapageanttoher.Nothavingexperienceofitherself,hermindhadunconsciouslyoccupieditselfforsomeyearsindressingupanimageoflove,andthemarriagethatwastheoutcomeoflove,andthemanwhoinspiredlove,whichnaturallydwarfedanyexamplesthatcameherway.Easily,andwithoutcorrectionbyreason,herimaginationmadepictures,superbbackgroundscastingarichthoughphantomlightuponthefactsintheforeground.Splendidasthewatersthatdropwithresoundingthunderfromhighledgesofrock,andplungedownwardsintothebluedepths
