Tom,afterawhile,startedtheideathatMaggiewasgonehome(withoutthinkingitnecessarytostatethatitwaswhatheshouldhavedonehimselfunderthecircumstances),andthesuggestionwasseizedasacomfortbyhismother.
“Sister,forgoodness’sakelet’emputthehorseinthecarriageandtakemehomeweshallperhapsfindherontheroad.Lucycan’twalkinherdirtyclothes,”shesaid,lookingatthatinnocentvictim,whowaswrappedupinashawl,andsittingwithnakedfeetonthesofa.
